My Top Games: 40. Wii Sports

October 22nd, 2009

I was saving these game descriptions for a possible video feature on Youtube, but I thought it’d make a fairly interesting first blog post. Who knows, I might still do this as a video in the future, but for now, enjoy my ramblings!

Wii is a bit of an puzzle. Its arrival prompted a scurry among competive hardware manufactures to declare the great motion controller war that awaits us next year with the arrival of Microsoft’s Natal, and Sony’s ball-on-a-stick. It also attracted audiences we never imagined would even touch a joystick without pissing themselves with fear. But while its placed itself in popular culture firmly, the console floods the landscape with the kind of bargin bin atrocities that would make the 1980’s Seal of quality hang its head in shame. But still, who needs bargin bin shitware when you’ve got Wii Sports.

The game reminds me of the kind of packages you’d recieve in the 70’s, when you bought a console which came with a couple of games and that was it. I’d imagine grannies refer to this entire package as the Wii, rather than the console itself. Once they’ve figured out how to get the damn thing together, you’re sorted, and playing a collection of A+ minigames. I’d honestly be surprised if the majority of Wii owners simply havn’t changed the gamedisc. Screw a Wii HD, just sell a stripped down Wii with Sports Resort built in, and scrap the Optical Disc drive. That’d sell, probably. Nah forget it, terrible idea.

Wii Sports is the only game ever created ever, where I managed to get my entire family involved. Sure, it was easy to sit back, watching Nintendo adverts and perceive them as typical commercial propaganda, but not with Wii Sports, it had that power. It was a short 10 minutes, but it was the best 10 minutes of family entertainment ever created. I tried my hardest, and was thrashed by my grandad. Its rare that a game gives my as much satisfaction in defeat as it does in success. But alas, Wii Sports isn’t the kind of game that’ll satisfy my intense gaming desires. Infact, the same could be said about the console itself, which is why Wii Sports is my highest, and only Wii game on my top 40 list! Sorry Nintendo fans, there are just way better games out there!

Wii Sports is bundled with the Nintendo Wii console. Purchase a Wii from Amazon UK here.
